The book
Amor, duelo y libertad
The print edition of «Amor, duelo y libertad», my book of poems and short pieces about grief, absence and the way back to inhabiting yourself.
A story of love, loss and rebuilding.

How the book began
How my poetry book was born
For a long time writing was my most intimate way of expressing myself. After losing my husband, it became again a place where I could meet myself.
A book written from experience, from pain, from love and from the decision to rebuild a life different from the one I had imagined.
I did not write to explain grief.
I wrote to live through it.
Sometimes life comes to us in unexpected ways, and most of the time we feel unsettled at not having reached what we had planned.
I have been there, with my dreams under way and about to come true. That dreamed life — house, car, the right job, a healthy family, “complete happiness” — and in the blink of an eye, without asking me, the Universe set me on a road where none of it came to pass.
Not only did those dreams not come true, but my companion in life, my friend, my husband and the father of my children would no longer walk beside me nor work shoulder to shoulder for the same ideals, at least not in this physical plane.
My dreams were left hanging in the infinite, returning to their first energy of love and shining in another way. I like to think of it like that. It softens my sense of frustration and sadness. Seven years. Seven years joining my fragments back into one. Seven years building my life and my dreams, now just my children and me. It sounds painful and impossible, but I have to admit that on this new and unknown road, sometimes stony and without direction, I have found a rich world, full of love, of learning about myself and of that precious thing: accepting myself.
That is how the idea of writing Amor, Duelo y Libertad, a gathering of writings from long ago and from today, came about; in it is all the emotional movement that has been with me. I have wept, I have suffered, I have fought, but I have also dreamed, I have laughed and, above all, I have loved: as a woman, as a friend, as a mother.
If you are living through a hard time: give yourself time. Take one day at a time. Treat yourself with care. And remember that a story can change shape without losing its meaning.
